Lymphatic Filariasis: An Overview
Wuchereria brancofti, Brugia malayi, Brugia timori are the main parasites which causes lymphatic filariasis. Lymphatic filariasis is a neglected topical disease with more than 1.3 billoin people worldwide. These are spread from by blood-feeding black flies and mosquitoes. These worms occupy the lymphatic system, including the lymph nodes; in chronic cases, these worms lead to the disease elepha...
متن کاملMDA—Lymphatic Filariasis
Lymphatic filariasis is one of the neglected tropical diseases. It is estimated that 120 million people are currently infected in 73 countries where filariasis is endemic. Lymphatic filariasis is a leading cause of chronic disability worldwide, including of 15 million people who have lymphoedema (elephantiasis) and 25 million men who have hydrocoele.

Beyond the societal impact of slavery, which continues to the present day, the transportation of millions of persons from sub-Saharan Africa to the New World also resulted in the imp...
متن کاملEndpoints for Lymphatic Filariasis Programs
In 2000, annual mass administration of diethlycarbamazine and albendazole began in Leogane Commune, Haiti, to interrupt transmission of lymphatic filariasis (LF). After 5 years of treatment, microfilaremia, antigenemia, and mosquito infection rates were significantly reduced, but LF transmission was not interrupted. These finding have implications for other LF elimination programs.
متن کاملImmunologic Tolerance in Lymphatic Filariasis
To explore the mechanisms of antigen-specific immune unresponsiveness seen in microfilaremic patients with bancroftian filariasis, T and B cell precursor frequency analysis was performed using PBMC from individuals with either asymptomatic microfilaremia (MF, n = 7) or chronic lymphatic obstruction (CP, n = 20). Highly purified CD3+ cells were partially reconstituted with adherent cells and the...
